We are excited to share with you a virtual event on Wednesday, October 5th at 8am.  We will be hearing from Hayley Murphy, DVM about her leadership journey starting in veterinary medicine to the CEO of the Detroit Zoological Society.

There are 2400 zoos in the United States and only 238 are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA.org). Sixty-six percent of the workforce in the Zoological Park Industry are women. Yet until Hayley Murphy was hired as the CEO of the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) in November of 2021, only 3 other women lead organizations with over 1 million visitors per year. Hayley took over the leadership of the DZS when the former CEO retired after 28 years in the role. The search was nation-wide and extensive. Hayley’s excellent reputation in the industry and her research in Great Ape Heart health fit nicely with the Detroit Zoo’s reputation for excellence in animal health, welfare, and science.

Hayley will chronicle her journey from practicing veterinary medicine to the CEO of one of the most visited attractions in Michigan. She will discuss the importance of technical knowledge, how she learned operations and fiscal management and finally leadership and strategic skills. Along the way she will tell some interesting stories about her experience in the world of exotic animals.
