Description

How to prepare a TED Talk

Presenters: Janet Tyler, COO, Red Level Networks; Executive Producer TEDx Detroit and Shawna Ramsey, Account Manager, Isobar

There’s a big difference between a speech that just presents information and one that changes lives. Janet Tyler understands the difference – and puts it on display for thousands of Metro Detroiters every year at TEDx Detroit. As an 8-year TEDx producer, a seasoned professional communications coach, and former co-CEO of one of the technology industry’s most dynamic public relations firms, Tyler understands the intricacies of transforming reportage or advocacy into a captivating, engaging narrative that changes hearts and minds.

In her presentation, Tyler will discuss the unique characteristics that have enabled TEDx talks and the TEDx format to command attention, capture imaginations, and drive transformation in business, technology, the arts, and the culture at large. Tyler will explore the defining differences that set outstanding speakers apart from the crowd, and that enable their messages to be remembered, assimilated, and acted upon. She’ll also offer a peek behind the TEDx curtain, explaining the complex dynamics and considerable challenges involved in staging this annual marathon event. Like TEDx Detroit audiences, attendees can expect to leave enlightened, entertained, and armed with new practical insights that they can put to work in their professional and personal communications.

Janet Tyler is a seasoned marketing, communications, and business operations professional with extensive strategic and leadership experience in the technology, education and public relations industries. In her current role as Chief Operating Officer for Red Level, a fast-growing technology consulting firm, Tyler oversees the company’s marketing, sales, and communications initiatives in addition to providing strategic guidance to the CEO and managing daily business operations. As COO, Tyler has helped accelerate the firm’s strong growth trajectory by modifying its market positioning and broadening awareness of its products and services. Prior to joining Red Level, Tyler established a fourteen-year track record of success as Cofounder, President and Co-CEO of Airfoil, a marketing and public relations firm focused on the technology sector. In these roles, Tyler was instrumental in guiding Airfoil to a dominant position within its niche, spearheading its expansion into Silicon Valley and leading the company from the start-up stage to over $6 million in annual revenues in only six years.
