July 8

Three Women in Wine

Join Michigan Master Sommelier Madeline Triffon in exploring the role of women in the modern world of wine with two exceptional California producers - Sara Floyd, Master Sommelier with Luli Wines, and Julie Johnson, winemaker for Tres Sabores. These three friends will enjoy an open-hearted conversation about their experiences over delicious wines, sharing personal stories of coming up in the business.

Sara Floyd produces Luli Wines in collaboration with the Pisoni Family, specializing in high-quality value wines from the Santa Lucia Highlands. Julie Johnson is the proprietor and winemaker of Tres Sabores, an organic ranch in Napa Valley’s Rutherford Bench. Madeline Triffon was the first American woman, and the second woman in the world, to pass the Master Sommelier examination in 1987.

You’ll have the opportunity to learn about four wines, two from each producer:

  • Luli Chardonnay & Pinot Noir, and Tres Sabores Rosé & Zinfandel
  • The wines will be available, individually or as a four-pack, through Plum Market’s website.
  • Please use this link to purchase the wines online through Plum Market. You’ll have the opportunity to taste up to four wines, and we suggest you choose at least one from each producer. The wines will be available at the Bloomfield, West Bloomfield and Ann Arbor North Campus Plum Markets. You can arrange for in-store or curbside pick-up. An additional 10% discount is offered on the four-pack.

Luli Chardonnay 2017 Santa Lucia Highlands

Luli Pinot Noir 2018 Santa Lucia Highlands

Tres Sabores ‘Ingrid & Julia’ Rosé 2019 Napa

Tres Sabores Porque No? (Cabernet, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel) 2016 Napa

This promises to be a fun, illuminating event!

Sara Floyd, Luli Wines

Sara Floyd is a Master Sommelier, the owner of Swirl Wine Brokers and has a long history in wine and restaurants. Sara Floyd has had a varied and colorful career in the wine business, launching her wine career working as an assistant to Larry Stone, the "dean" of American sommeliers, at Rubicon restaurant in San Francisco. Her success as a businesswoman should be sufficient to establish her credibility. But Sara also is a Master Sommelier, the tenth woman in the world to have earned the title.

Julie Johnson, Tres Sabores

Julie Johnson is the winemaker at Tres Sabores, founded in 1999 and located in the Rutherford area of Napa Valley. She began her professional life as a public health nurse. She is the mother of six children and stepchildren, an optimistic and engaged winemaker and marketer, and married to winemaker Jon Engelskirger. Julie graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine and from Columbia University in New York. Julie moved to her Rutherford property in 1987. Diverse and integrated, it is organically certified (CCOF) for grapes, olives, pomegranates, olives, lamb, and guinea fowl. At the end of the day, she sleeps best if she feels that she has been a thoughtful steward of the land and has capped off the day with a very good glass of wine.

Madeline Triffon, Plum Market

Master Sommelier Madeline Triffon knows service. It's one of the areas of testing on the Court of Master Sommeliers exam, which she passed in 1987, becoming the second woman in the world to do so. After bartending as a University of Michigan student, Madeline's career path continued in service: First in Detroit's restaurant industry, at such iconic restaurants as London Chop House and The Rattlesnake Club, and now with specialty grocery chain Plum Market.
